If you’re a fan of epic stories with mythology, politics, interesting characters, and an imaginative world, then the Gold and Steel Saga should be on your reading list.

I’d best compare this book to the Lord of the Rings trilogy (but without the massive amounts of description) or Games of Thrones (but without the massive amount of characters to keep track of). My interest definitely picked up with Marigold’s chapter and didn’t lose any steam from then on. (Minor note: Marigold is not as prominent a character as Orangecloak, the Thieves, or Tryst, but she’s still pretty darn important.) An imaginative and eclectic mix of , JRR Tolkien, George RR Martin and… Baz Luhrmann???

I’ll admit I wasn’t sure what to expect when I picked up my digital copy of As Fierce as Steel by first-time author Christopher P. Walsh. I knew it was a fantasy genre from Walsh’s stellar campaigning over the last year, and I saw with a quick flip through the pages that the chapter breaks were similar in style to RR Martin (in that, each chapter switches the point-of-view and the character-in-questions name is the default ‘chapter title’). I read all five of the A Song of Ice and Fire books this past year so that slight visual cue alone gave me what I thought was a reasonable expectation of what lay within. Meet your Fantasy from the Rock team: Christopher Walsh

promo_cover7_webWe spent most of January announcing our Fantasy from the Rock all-star lineup, but without actually reading the stories (and you can’t, not until April 27th!) it’s hard to get to know the authors that are helping make up this epic collection. With that in mind, here’s our interview with Christopher Walsh, author of the Gold and Steel Saga and one of the all-star fantasy authors of this collection!

1. What is your favorite word?
Chris: Palindrome. That was a bit of a thinker. I’ve never thought about what might be my favourite word before. I think ‘palindrome’ is a fun word, though. Say it over a few times in your head. Plus, once you start using the word often, you’ll start looking for palindromes in word and number sequences you see. Continue reading Meet your Fantasy from the Rock team: Christopher Walsh

Chris Walsh wins the nobel prize: Dream Journal

Oscar Wilde once wrote: ” A writer is someone who has taught his mind to misbehave,” and I firmly believe that to be true. My mind misbehaves. My mind puts thing together in weird, creative, terminally-f’ed-up ways that make people look at me with their heads tilted and their eyebrows raised: especially when I say those thoughts out loud, which I often do, and which often makes me “that guy” at the party. But this is normal for an author: see people like new things in their fiction, and when we make new fiction we get positive reinforcement in the form of money and recognition: so our brain learns to do that messed up thing it did. It’s like Pavlov’s Dog meets Cards Vs Humanity: just a very bad positive feedback loop.

I say all this to prepare you for what may be an ongoing segment: Matt’s Dream Journal. We all have messed-up dreams, that’s true of us all. Dreams are our mind misbehaving, finding connections where there were none before… for someone who has taught their mind to be this way 24/7, this takes on some new meaning. You were warned
