What do these three writers have in common? | LeDrew’s Blog

They are, collectively, the only people who will ever be able to say they’ve been featured in every From the Rock collection: Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Chillers, Dystopia, and now Flights from the Rock.

Over the last five years, the From the Rock series has become one that is routinely among the bestselling anthologies in Canada. It has become a series that makes authors bestsellers. With that success has come increased competition: the first volume, Sci-Fi from the Rock, featured many reprints from previous defunct Engen volumes, as we only received a dozen or so submissions. Now we routinely receive over a hundred, typically 300,000 words worth of submissions.

To put it bluntly, the competition has gotten fierce.

Which makes it all the more impressive that there are three authors who have made it into every, single, collection: Ali House, Peter J Foote, & Matthew Daniels. Continue reading What do these three writers have in common? | LeDrew’s Blog

Returning Rocker: Prize-Winning author Peter J. Foote announced as returning for ‘Dystopia from the Rock’!

Engen Books is proud to announce the triumphant return of author Peter J. Foote to this year’s From the Rock collection, Dystopia from the Rock.

Peter J. Foote is a bestselling speculative fiction writer from Nova Scotia. Outside of writing, he runs a used bookstore specializing in fantasy & sci-fi, cosplays, and alternates between red wine and coffee as the mood demands.

His short stories can be found in both print and in ebook form, with his story “Sea Monkeys” winning the inaugural “Engen Books/Kit Sora, Flash Fiction/Flash Photography” contest in March of 2018. As the founder of the group “Genre Writers of Atlantic Canada”, Peter believes that the writing community is stronger when it works together.

Foote’s submissions have gained entry into each of the four modern From the Rock volumes. His story ‘The Silence Between Moons’ appeared in 2016’s Sci-Fi from the Rock, ‘A Troll by Any Other Name…’ in 2017’s Fantasy from the Rock, and ‘A Friend in Shadow’ in 2018’s Chillers from the Rock. Foote has proven himself to be a renaissance man of genre fiction, capable of rising to the occasion of any challenge thrown his way. As competition over placement in the From the Rock series has improved, so has Foote steadily grown in his authorial abilities. His newest story in titled ‘Final Edict.’ Continue reading Returning Rocker: Prize-Winning author Peter J. Foote announced as returning for ‘Dystopia from the Rock’!

“Little Star and the Shepherdess” by Peter Foote | Short Story Winner

“Hello little star, are you awake?” Emma whispers through the panels of the door to the mud brick lamb pen where she had rolled the wounded star several days ago.

The soft golden light inside beats a steady rhythm as a response, provoking a smile to cross Emma’s face. Crouching  beside the door, Emma thinks back to how she had discovered the  injured star while searching for a wayward lamb.

Blackened and battered, the tiny star had plummeted to earth after being knocked out of the heavens. Her heart filled with compassion, Emma rolled the flickering star into the safety of the lamb pen before the rising sun could weaken it further. Winner: “Sea Monkeys” by Peter Foote | Kit Sora Flash Fiction Photography Contest

After much deliberation, Engen Books is proud to announce the winner of the March 2018 Kit Sora Flash Fiction Photography Contest: Peter Foote with his story, Sea Monkeys!

We received over forty submissions for this month’s collection, all of them spectacular in their own right. To find the winner we used a double-blind alternate-vote method, in which no judge knew the name of the person who had written any story. Each judge then compiled a list of their own personal Top Ten picks, and each entry was assigned a point title. The lowest entries were whittled down every round until only one remained!

Fantasy from the Rock Review by Sambath Meas!

by Sambath Meas

“Fantasy from the Rock” is a collection of short stories from authors who love telling folklores about humans, fairies, trolls, dwarves, elves, witches, and fortunetellers. There are a few stories that don’t quite fit, nevertheless; due to their strangeness, they still fall into this fantasy genre. What they all have in common, however, is their entertainment value. The authors are experienced writers and storytellers and obviously, they love their craft. Many of the stories reveal moral lessons, which folklores of ancient time had often taught us. Like human beings, magical creatures have their negative and positive sides. They’re flawed just like us human beings. Those who allow evil and negative spiritual forces to dominate them threaten other beings as well as the environment in which they live and share with others. My favorite stories are the ones with moral lessons. Thankfully, many are teeming with them. Continue reading Fantasy from the Rock Review by Sambath Meas!
