Sci-Fi from the Rock 2016

Engen Books is proud to announce the triumphant return of author Sam Bauer to this year’s From the Rock collection, Chillers from the Rock.

Bauer has been featured in each of the three modern From the Rock volumes. His story ‘The Locket’ appeared in 2016’s Sci-Fi from the Rock and ‘Precious Pieces Unknown’ in 2017’s Fantasy from the Rock. Bauer brings with him two short stories for this collection, ‘Dark Peaks’ and ‘Nuckelavee.’

Fantasy from the Rock Review by Sambath Meas!

by Sambath Meas

“Fantasy from the Rock” is a collection of short stories from authors who love telling folklores about humans, fairies, trolls, dwarves, elves, witches, and fortunetellers. There are a few stories that don’t quite fit, nevertheless; due to their strangeness, they still fall into this fantasy genre. What they all have in common, however, is their entertainment value. The authors are experienced writers and storytellers and obviously, they love their craft. Many of the stories reveal moral lessons, which folklores of ancient time had often taught us. Like human beings, magical creatures have their negative and positive sides. They’re flawed just like us human beings. Those who allow evil and negative spiritual forces to dominate them threaten other beings as well as the environment in which they live and share with others. My favorite stories are the ones with moral lessons. Thankfully, many are teeming with them. Continue reading Fantasy from the Rock Review by Sambath Meas!

Sam Bauer announced as returning for Fantasy from the Rock!

sammyReturning to this year’s collection after debuting last year is Sam Bauer with his story, Precious Pieces.

Sam Bauer is a young writer from St. John’s Newfoundland. He gets his ideas from eating too much sugar-laden food, reading the works of H. P. Lovecraft and Edgar Allen Poe until 4 am, and transcribing the ensuing nightmares. Most, however, are unusable as they are frightening only to those who share his phobia of squirrels, spoons and the number 73. In his spare time, Sam enjoys Dungeons and Dragons, playing in the Music Collection Drumline and pillaging small villages with his band of fellow gentle, but misunderstood, Visigoths.

Sam’s first story, The Lockett, was met with widespread acclaim from the independent literature community. In the year since he has read it at venues across the country, begun working with an award-winning Newfoundland author as a consultant, and is currently working on his first novel.

We expect big things from Sam and can’t wait to see what he brings!

Tales of a FftR Reject | Distractions

Matthew LeDrewHow strict is the competition of slots in the upcoming 2017 collection Fantasy from the Rock? Well, I own the company, and I didn’t get in.

Yeah, process that! Anyone who thinks there’s any favoritism here at Engen Books has another thing coming, and should read the sad, sad story of Matthew LeDrew: failed Fantasy from the Rock applicant. 😉

Flight or Fight by Scott Bartlett | Other Indie

Written by Sam Bauer, special to Other Indie.

The end of our world fascinates us. From Ragnarok, the end of the world in Norse mythology, to the groundbreaking 1984 by George Orwell, to the more modern Hunger Games and Maze Runner, not to mention countless disaster movies, TV shows and video games. It is enough to make one sick of dystopia, groan at zombies, and run screaming from a nuclear or biological holocaust. (Though I must admit, I do the last one on basic principle.) Indeed, it is rare for me to find a dystopic or apocalyptic novel that I enjoy.

But, as the more astute of you have already guessed, I have found a rarity. Its name is Flight or Fight, a 2016 cyberpunk satire written by Scott Bartlett and published by Mirth Publishing.
