Reviews

“A wonderful testing ground for new authors. Not only do we get to see what stories work, but readers get an easily accessible venue to see what authors they enjoy following and might enjoy following in the future. The work of all three authors was fantastical and imaginative, each in their own special way.”
Matthew LeDrew
author of Black Womb and Infinity

“I cannot deny the gripping dialogue and subtle foreshadowing in The Gold and Steel Saga.”
Jonathan Mallard,
Life After Death Society

“Fantasy had its beginnings in mythology and, by extension, religion. In addition to faith, though, fantasy also challenges belief. This collection is very much in tune with both of these sides of fantasy. Social order, tradition, the world and our place in it, humanity, daily life, even the nature of stories — beliefs about all of these are challenged in Fantasy from the Rock. So celebrate the fairies and other miracles you find in its pages, but look for the challenges and reversals. It’s enlightening, and a great deal of fun”
— Matthew Daniels,
author of Healer’s Hoards and Living and Learning.

Song of the Mockingjay | Erin Vance

An essay examining the nature of Katniss Everdeen’s agency in Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games series. Considering the current state of global affairs, and the increasing numbers of conflicts, readers of The Hunger Games will likely have to confront oppressive regimes, whether in their own country or in another. Therefore, the fact that The Hunger Games does not glorify war and condemns government oppression demands further critical analysis and recognition.

Gold Nail Polish, New Friends, and a Couple Good Foot Stomps

I just took off my gold nail polish, which means that SciFi on the Rock is offically over for me. Am I recovered from three full days of meeting and greeting, selling and yelling yet? No, of course not. Does one ever recover from a brand new experience? Not really; I think what happens instead is you just adapt to this new aspect of your life. And, just like it took me a long time to adapt to the experience of driving across the country and back, I think it’s going to take me a while to adapt to SciFi on the Rock 10.

In all honesty, I feel somewhat disoriented. I went from SciFi on the Rock – nearly twelve hours a day for three days – and then was expected to return to the routine of life. Rather like Dorothy must have marveled at the thought of returning to Kansas after experiencing Oz, or Frodo wondered at how Hobbiton could feel like home, I am looking around my world and thinking that it doesn’t quite fit anymore.

(Of course, that could be the exhaustion speaking. I am already remembering my place in this routine I have established over the last few weeks.)

Top 5 Anticipated Releases of 2016

When it comes to distractions (and that is the name of this blog after all) nothing eats up more of my time than anticipation: that time spent waiting for the next novel in a series or the next season of a show of the next movie in a franchise. Follow my train of thought here: if the next movie in my favorite franchise was out I could just watch it, a distraction from my work of no more than 3 hours. But waiting for it, wondering about it, watching trailers, reading predictions, fixating on it, and then watching it: that’s a much heavier time commitment that I should be using to write and edit.

With that in mind, here are my Top 5 most anticipated book releases of 2016. These are the books that have left me sitting in my chair wondering rather than sitting in my chair working, and time can’t tick by fast enough for them to arrive!
